Bollywood\u2019s box office performance in 2024 has been somewhat mixed when compared to the booming year of 2023. In the first half of 2024, the industry garnered Rs 1,081 crore, a 20-25 percent decline from Rs 1,450 crore during the same period in 2023. This dip highlights the absence of massive blockbusters like Shah Rukh Khan’s Pathaan or Jawan, which were pivotal to 2023’s success, collectively bringing in over Rs 1,600 crore<\/p>\n

The trend suggests that it\u2019s not about the genre but about offering entertaining and engaging content that respects the audience\u2019s investment of time and money,” Film exhibitor Akshaye Rathi stated.
He further added, “Upcoming films like Pushpa 2 (action drama), Baby John (action thriller), and Mufasa (family drama) highlight the diversity in Bollywood’s cinematic offerings. Ultimately, films that resonate with audiences, regardless of their genre, have achieved the most success.”

Ramesh Bala analysed the reasons behind their failure, stating, “Post-Covid, no film is guaranteed box office success if it’s just average or mediocre. Movies need to offer something extraordinary. For example, Bade Miyan Chote Miyan struggled because its screenplay wasn’t strong enough, leading to its faltering performance. Similarly, Maidan, with its underdog theme of coaching the Indian team, didn’t stand out, as many similar films have already been made. In today’s post-Covid world, every genre must feature the best; being merely ‘good’ isn’t enough. That’s why these films failed, despite their big budgets and star casts.”
Sharing his opinion on the same, Akshaye Rathee added, “I think any film that underperforms or doesn’t do well is purely because of one reason: the lack of engagement with the audience. And I believe that for any of the films that didn’t perform well, it’s purely that reason\u2014we can’t attribute it to anything else. Another factor, I think, where we often go wrong in Hindi cinema is with bad marketing, which doesn\u2019t land well. We do things to create awareness and fuel the vanity of some actors and filmmakers, but we really don\u2019t do enough to create FOMO among moviegoers to get them to turn up at the cinema hall on the first day, first show.”

Sharing his take on the same, Akshaye Rathee stated, “Regional cinema has always had its space and impact. If you look at it, Kalki 2898 AD is one of the biggest earners for Hindi cinema halls this year, alongside films like Stree 2 and Munjya. Pushpa 2, originally a Telugu film, is also set to have a major impact. I truly believe that the boundaries between Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, Hindi, Punjabi, Bhojpuri, and Gujarati films are quickly diminishing. We are functioning as the Indian film fraternity, and that\u2019s really the way forward.”
Ramesh Bala further added, “Bollywood films continue to do well. Stree 2, Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2, and Singham Again have performed well. However, with regional films, the movie-going culture in the South is much stronger compared to the North. This has allowed South regional cinema to flourish. But when they make Pan-India movies like Kalki 2898 AD and Pushpa, they find success both in the North and South, giving them an edge over Bollywood. The key advantage of Pan-India regional films is their ability to succeed in both regions. On the other hand, most Bollywood successes remain primarily in North India. It\u2019s rare to see Hindi films achieve significant success across both North and South on the same scale.”
With films like Pushpa 2 set to release later this year, many are speculating how its box office performance will contribute to the overall recovery of the film industry. The success of Pushpa 2, especially given the growing popularity of Pan-India regional films, could play a pivotal role in boosting confidence within the industry.
According to Ramesh Bala, “Pushpa 2 is expected to perform very well at the box office, potentially reaching 1,000 crores. If it achieves this, it will be a significant step towards recovering the industry. Not only is it expected to do well in the South, but also in the North, East, and West. The success of Pushpa 2 will likely provide the much-needed boost for the Indian film industry.”
Akshaye Rathee further pointed out, “Given the unpredictability of the box office this year and the inconsistency with which movies have performed, we really need not just Pushpa 2, but all of the major December releases\u2014like Baby John, Mufasa, and others\u2014to be successful. I genuinely hope these films can achieve massive hits, similar to how we saw Pathaan, Jawan, Animal, and Gadar last year. Ideally, Pushpa 2 should be able to surpass regular benchmarks and reach a net box office collection of at least 500 crores in the Hindi market alone.”
